EJ25 Head Gasket — The Repair That Defines Subaru Ownership

The EJ25 head gasket is the most consequential repair Subaru owners face. There are two failure modes — and getting the diagnosis right determines whether you need a head gasket repair or risk a destroyed engine. We diagnose before we recommend replacement.

External Oil Seep

  • • Oil spots under the car
  • • Smell from exhaust
  • • Serious but not urgent
  • • Plan and budget — 3-6 months

Internal Coolant Leak

  • • Coolant loss, no visible drip
  • • White exhaust smoke
  • • Immediate repair required
  • • One overheat = warped heads

Our Repair

  • • OEM Subaru head gaskets
  • • Machine shop resurfacing (both heads)
  • • New OEM head bolts (never reused)
  • • Quoted after inspection

The price covers OEM parts, new head bolts and machine shop resurfacing of both heads.

Why Peninsula Subaru Owners Choose Express Auto

Independent Labor Rates

We charge independent labor rates and post our typical prices above. Free inspection, walk-in or by appointment: a code scan plus a visual inspection; $250 diagnostics, waived when we complete the repair.

EJ25 Head Gasket Specialists

We use OEM Subaru head gaskets, new OEM head bolts (never reused — they are torque-to-yield), and send both heads to a machine shop for resurfacing. Resurfacing gives the new gaskets a flat surface to seal against.

EJ vs. FA/FB Timing Knowledge

EJ-series engines (through approximately 2012) use timing belts — service is required and critical. FA/FB-series engines (2013+ Crosstrek, newer Forester and Outback) use timing chains — no replacement interval. We identify your engine series by VIN and service it correctly. We do not upsell a timing belt service on a chain-driven engine.

WRX and STI Expertise

We service all WRX and STI generations with the correct Motul or Castrol 5W-30 full synthetic, intercooler inspection, and differential service. STI DCCD rear differential fluid, front differential, and transfer case — all serviced at correct intervals. Track WRX/STI owners: mention track use so we adjust service focus.

Same-Week Appointments

We usually schedule within a week, often same-day or next-day for urgent repairs like an active coolant leak or overheating concern. We call you when it's ready — no follow-up required.

Central Peninsula Location

At 1041 San Mateo Ave, San Bruno, we're right off Hwy 101 and 380. Drop your Subaru and take our free shuttle to San Bruno BART. Free shuttle within 5 miles of the shop, including Colma, San Bruno, Millbrae and South San Francisco.

Subaru Dealer Alternative — FAQ

Does going to an independent shop void my Subaru warranty?

No. Subaru cannot void your warranty solely because you used an independent shop, as long as equivalent Subaru-approved parts and procedures are used. In-warranty repairs must go to a Subaru dealer. For out-of-warranty service and maintenance you can use Express Auto.

Does my Subaru have a timing belt or timing chain?

It depends on the engine. EJ-series engines (EJ20, EJ25 — Outback, Legacy, Forester, Impreza through approximately 2012, and WRX/STI) use timing belts that must be replaced on a service interval — typically every 60,000-105,000 miles. FA/FB-series engines (2013+ Crosstrek, newer Forester and Outback with the 2.5L FB25, BRZ/86) use timing chains with no replacement interval. We identify your engine series by VIN and advise accordingly.

What is the difference between an EJ25 external seep and internal head gasket leak?

External seep: oil seeps along the gasket edge and drips onto the exhaust. You see oil spots under the car. Serious but not immediately catastrophic — you have time to plan and budget. Internal coolant leak: combustion gases enter the coolant circuit. You lose coolant with no visible drip, see white exhaust smoke, and risk overheating. We use a combustion leak test (block test) to distinguish the two before recommending any repair.

Does Express Auto service WRX and STI?

Yes. We service all WRX and STI generations — VA WRX (2015-2021), GR/GV WRX (2008-2014), and all STI variants. WRX/STI service includes correct Motul or Castrol 5W-30 full synthetic, intercooler inspection, EJ turbo oil feed line inspection, and front/rear differential service. STI owners who track their cars: mention it — we adjust service intervals and inspection focus accordingly.

Is the Subaru Outback or Forester CVT reliable?

The Lineartronic CVT used in 2015+ base Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek is generally reliable when the CVT fluid is serviced every 30,000-60,000 miles with Subaru-spec Lineartronic fluid (CVTF). Most CVT failures we see are from neglected fluid service. Do not use generic ATF in a Subaru CVT — it will cause clutch pack damage.

How much does Subaru service cost at Express Auto?

We charge independent labor rates and quote each job after an inspection, so the price matches the parts your car actually needs.

Is the code scan free? What does diagnosis cost?

Free inspection, walk-in or by appointment: a code scan plus a visual inspection. Our free inspection is a code scan plus a visual inspection of the car. Diagnostics is for when we need more time to find the root cause. We diagnose with Snap-on and Matco bi-directional scan tools.
