Frequently Asked Questions — Subaru Service
What is the Subaru EJ head gasket problem and which models are affected?
The Subaru EJ25 2.5L naturally-aspirated engine (used in Outback, Forester, and Legacy from approximately 1999–2011) has a documented head gasket failure pattern. The multi-layer steel (MLS) gasket can leak externally (oil or coolant seeping at the gasket seam) or internally (combustion gases entering coolant). External leaks are the most common and can be repaired before internal damage occurs. We recommend head gasket inspection on any EJ25 Outback or Forester with over 100,000 miles.
How much does Subaru head gasket replacement cost at Express Auto?
Our Subaru EJ25 head gasket replacement (both sides, which is always recommended) includes OEM-grade Subaru MLS gaskets, a thermostat, coolant flush and a valve clearance check. We include a cooling system pressure test before and after to confirm the repair. Most Outback and Forester head gasket jobs are completed in 2 days.
Do Subaru EJ engines use timing belts or timing chains?
All Subaru EJ-series engines (EJ20, EJ22, EJ25 — used in Outback, Forester, Legacy, Impreza WRX, and STI through approximately 2012) use timing belts, which must be replaced every 60,000–105,000 miles depending on model year. Newer Subaru FB engines (FA20, FB20, FB25 — used in 2013+ Forester, Crosstrek, and newer Outback) use timing chains with no replacement interval. The BRZ/86 FA20 also uses a chain.
Does Express Auto service the Subaru WRX and STI?
Yes. We service WRX (VA/GR body) and STI with appropriate EJ20/EJ25 turbo engine expertise: correct Motul or Castrol 5W-30 full synthetic, turbo cooling-down procedure, intercooler condition inspection, and boost system check. For WRX CVT models (2015+ base WRX), we use Subaru-approved Lineartronic CVT fluid. STI owners: we perform the PPT gear oil service and LSD fluid changes that protect the performance drivetrain.
