N20/N26 Timing Chain — What to Watch For
The N20 and N26 engine in 2012–2016 BMW 3 Series, 4 Series, X1, and X3 has a documented timing chain tensioner failure. The plastic tensioner wears out and the chain begins slapping on cold starts — then skips — then destroys the engine. We see multiple N20 failures per month at our shop.

Does going to an independent shop void my BMW warranty?
No. BMW cannot void your warranty solely because you used an independent shop, as long as equivalent BMW-approved parts and procedures are used. In-warranty repairs must go to a BMW dealer. For out-of-warranty service and maintenance you can use Express Auto.
What diagnostic tools does Express Auto use for BMW?
We use Snap-on and Matco bi-directional scan tools. They read and clear fault codes across BMW modules (DME, transmission, ABS, DSC, airbag and iDrive), show live data, run bi-directional tests and reset CBS service counters. We do not use BMW factory software. Free inspection, walk-in or by appointment: a code scan plus a visual inspection. Diagnostics is for when we need more time to find the root cause.
What is the N20 timing chain issue and how serious is it?
The N20/N26 engine used in 2012-2016 BMW 3 Series, 4 Series, X1, and X3 has a documented timing chain tensioner failure. The plastic tensioner degrades and allows the chain to slap on cold starts — eventually causing the chain to jump or break, resulting in catastrophic engine damage. We see multiple N20 failures per month at our shop. Proactive timing chain, guide and tensioner replacement at 60,000-80,000 miles is strongly recommended.
Does Express Auto reset the BMW CBS maintenance indicator?
Yes. We reset the BMW CBS (Condition Based Service) system with our bi-directional scan tools. This includes resetting individual service counters (oil, brake fluid, brake pads, microfilter, vehicle check, spark plugs) to the correct intervals after service. Without a proper CBS reset, your maintenance indicator will not accurately predict the next due date. Every oil service and inspection at Express Auto includes the CBS reset.

Yes. We service all BMW M models — M2 (F87/G87), M3 (E90/F80/G80), M4 (F82/G82), M5 (F10/G30), M6, X5M, X6M. M engines require BMW LL-04 or Castrol Supercar 0W-40 depending on the variant; we stock both. M-car oil service includes CBS reset, brake inspection (M cars use heavier brake pads with different wear characteristics), and a general review of common M-model issues including differential fluid and rod bearing condition on high-mileage S54/S65/S85 engines.
