Which Honda models have timing belts and which have timing chains?
Honda V6 (J-series) engines use timing belts that must be replaced every 90,000 miles or 7 years: Accord V6 (1998–2012), Odyssey (1999–2017), Pilot (2003–2015), and Ridgeline (2006–2014). These are interference engines — a broken belt destroys the engine. Most newer Hondas use timing chains: Accord 4-cylinder (2013+), Civic (all recent), CR-V (2002+), HR-V, Pilot (2016+), and Passport. Yes. Honda CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) fluid service is critical every 30,000–40,000 miles — Honda's own maintenance schedule often lists it as "inspect only" but the fluid degrades. We use Honda-genuine HCF-2 CVT fluid (the only fluid Honda approves) and do a drain-and-refill.
