Frequently Asked Questions
What is the MCU1 eMMC failure on Tesla Model S?
MCU1 (Media Control Unit, 2012-2018 Model S) uses an 8GB eMMC flash chip for the Linux OS and data logging. Over time, the chip's write cycles exhaust and the touchscreen becomes permanently unresponsive — first sluggish, then frozen, then dead. Tesla issued a recall (21V-122) covering some MCU1 units, but many are now out-of-scope. Options: Tesla's MCU2 upgrade, or third-party eMMC chip replacement. We can assess your MCU1 health via the Tesla software and advise on the best path.
How long does Tesla Model S air suspension last?
Air spring bladders typically last 70,000-100,000 miles before developing slow leaks or catastrophic failure. The compressor can outlast the bladders or fail first depending on how often the system cycles (more failures on cars with "Low" ride height set permanently). Symptoms of failing air suspension: car sitting low on one corner, slow compressor cycling sounds at startup, "Air suspension needs service" alert, or car bottoming out on speed bumps.
Can Express Auto service my 2015 Tesla Model S?
Yes. We service all Model S production years (2012-present) including early MCU1 cars, AP1/AP2 Autopilot hardware, ludicrous-mode P85D/P90D/P100D and Plaid variants. The official Tesla diagnostic software works across all Model S generations. For 2012-2018 MCU1 Model S, we recommend scheduling an eMMC health check during any service visit — it's a free assessment with the Tesla software connected.
What is the Tesla Model S annual service schedule?
Tesla doesn't mandate annual service, but recommends: brake fluid test every 2 years, HVAC filter every 2 years (older S), tire rotation every 6,250 miles (RWD) or 6,250 miles (AWD), cabin air filter annually, coolant check every 4 years, drive unit fluid check at 150,000 miles. We follow this schedule with the Tesla software to reset service reminders after each item is completed.
