Common Symptoms

If you experience these symptoms, your Porsche 911 / Cayenne / Macan / Panamera / Boxster / Cayman may need pre-purchase inspection:

Considering purchase of any 996 or 997-generation Porsche 911 (1999-2012)
Looking at a Cayenne V8 (955/957 generation, 2003-2010)
Evaluating a Boxster or Cayman with M96/M97 engine
Seller cannot provide complete service history
Vehicle has not been serviced at an authorized Porsche center
Any Porsche with over 50,000 miles and no IMS bearing documentation

Why This Happens

Understanding the root cause helps prevent future issues:

1.IMS (Intermediate Shaft) bearing failure — destroys M96/M97 engines without warning
2.Plastic coolant pipe brittle failure on Cayenne V8
3.Neglected PDK or Tiptronic service causing transmission wear
4.RMS (Rear Main Seal) oil leak causing clutch contamination on manual cars
5.Deferred maintenance disguised with fresh detail and oil change before sale
6.Hidden accident damage to chassis or suspension affecting alignment and handling

Our Repair Process

How we handle pre-purchase inspection at Express Auto in San Bruno:

1

PIWIS 4 full system scan: read all fault codes across every module — engine, transmission, ABS, airbag, PASM, air suspension. Stored codes reveal history the seller won't mention.

2

IMS bearing inspection assessment: identify engine generation (M96/M97) and oil filter housing type. Determine LN Engineering retrofit eligibility and urgency based on mileage and service history.

3

Coolant system inspection (Cayenne V8): pressure test, inspect plastic distribution pipes for brittleness and cracks. This is the #1 Cayenne failure that surprises buyers.

4

Compression and leak-down test: measure compression on all cylinders and test for head gasket leaks or valve wear. A worn engine shows in compression before it fails.

5

PDK/Tiptronic fluid condition: drain a small sample and inspect color, smell, and particle content. Burnt fluid or metal particles indicate neglected service.

6

Exterior and undercarriage inspection: look for accident repair, frame welds, color-mismatched panels. Check control arm bushings, CV boots, and brake pad/rotor condition.

7

Road test: evaluate clutch feel, gear engagement, PASM behavior, braking performance, and any unusual noises. Porsche-specific driving evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the IMS bearing and why should I care before buying a Porsche 911?

The IMS (Intermediate Shaft) bearing on 1999-2008 Porsche 911 (M96 engine) and 2005-2012 911 (M97 engine) is a known failure point. The failure gives little to no warning. Before buying any 996 or early 997, you must know if the IMS bearing has been replaced with the LN Engineering upgrade or if it is still at risk.

How much does a Porsche pre-purchase inspection cost?

Our Porsche pre-purchase inspection includes a PIWIS 4 full scan, IMS bearing assessment, coolant system pressure test, compression and leak-down test, fluid inspection and a road test, with a written report. We quote it before we start.

Can I use a regular mechanic for a Porsche PPI?

You can, but it is inadvisable. A Porsche PPI needs a Porsche diagnostic tester such as PIWIS 4, knowledge of Porsche-specific failure modes (IMS, coolant pipe, RMS, PDK) and experience evaluating Porsche chassis and drivetrain. A general mechanic may miss the IMS risk entirely or not know how to interpret Porsche fault codes. Use a Porsche specialist.

Which Porsche models are highest risk to buy without inspection?

1. 1999-2005 Porsche 911 (996 generation) — highest IMS failure rate. 2. 2005-2008 Porsche 911 (997.1 generation) — M97 engine still has IMS risk. 3. 2003-2010 Cayenne V8 — plastic coolant pipe failure. 4. 1997-2004 Boxster — M96 engine with IMS risk. Any Porsche without documented IMS replacement should be inspected by a specialist before purchase.

Does Express Auto provide mobile Porsche inspections or can I bring the car to you?

We perform inspections at our San Bruno shop only — we need our lift, PIWIS 4 system, compression testing equipment, and fluid analysis capability to do a proper inspection. If the seller is on the Peninsula (Daly City to Palo Alto), bring the car to our shop at 1041 San Mateo Ave, San Bruno. We can usually schedule within a week.
