Porsche Brake Service — PCCB, Steel, and Sport Brakes Explained
Porsche brakes are engineered to match the performance of each model — from the carbon-ceramic PCCB rotors on track-spec 911s to the iron rotors on the Cayenne. Getting brake service right on a Porsche requires knowing which system your car has, using the correct pad compound for that system, and resetting the brake wear indicators properly. Express Auto uses PIWIS 4, Porsche’s factory diagnostic tester, and services all Porsche brake variants.

Our Repair Process
How we handle brake service at Express Auto in San Bruno:
PIWIS 4 diagnostic scan to read brake wear sensor data and fault codes for all four corners
Visual inspection through wheel spokes: rotor surface condition, pad thickness, caliper condition
Measure rotor thickness against Porsche minimum specification (varies by model and rotor size)
Remove wheel for detailed inspection: caliper slide lubrication, dust boot condition, brake hose condition
Replace pads with correct Porsche-spec compound — steel rotors: OEM-equivalent sport compound; PCCB: Porsche-approved PCCB-specific pad only
Resurface or replace rotors as needed — Porsche rotors are not resurfaced if within 1mm of minimum spec
Brake fluid test and replacement if over 2 years or >3% moisture
Reset brake wear sensors and confirm via PIWIS 4 after service

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Porsche PCCB and steel brakes?
PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake) rotors are carbon-ceramic units available as an option on 911, Panamera, Cayenne Turbo, and Taycan. They weigh about 50% less than iron rotors and withstand extremely high temperatures without fade — important for track use. Steel (iron) rotors are the standard fitment on most Porsches. PCCB pads must only be used with PCCB rotors — cross-contaminating pad compounds causes rapid, expensive rotor damage. We identify which system your Porsche has before ordering any parts.
How often do Porsche brakes need service?
Porsche does not publish a fixed brake interval — brake wear depends heavily on driving style, terrain, and whether the vehicle sees track use. For street-driven Porsches in the Bay Area, expect front pads every 25,000-40,000 miles and rotors every 40,000-60,000 miles. Brake fluid every 2 years per Porsche specification. Cayenne owners often see longer intervals due to lighter use; 911 GT3/RS track users may need pads every 5,000-10,000 miles. We track brake condition at every service visit.
Can you reset the Porsche brake wear warning light?
Yes. We use Porsche PIWIS 4 to read and clear all brake-related fault codes including wear sensor faults. The brake pad wear sensors on most Porsche models are single-use — they are replaced with the pads. After replacing sensors and pads, we clear the fault via PIWIS 4 and confirm the warning light extinguishes. We cannot simply reset the light without replacing the sensor — the sensor circuit is broken when the pad wears through.
Does Express Auto service Porsche PCCB ceramic brakes?
Yes, with important caveats. PCCB rotors require PCCB-specific pads (Porsche part number or approved equivalent). We do not install steel-rotor pad compounds on PCCB rotors — this destroys the ceramic surface within a few brake applications. PCCB rotor replacement is significantly more expensive than steel rotors. We inspect PCCB rotor condition (surface cracks, delamination, minimum thickness) and advise whether the rotors need replacement or are serviceable.
How much does Porsche brake service cost at Express Auto?
PCCB work is quoted after inspection. We use OEM-equivalent parts that meet Porsche specifications and do the sensor replacement and PIWIS 4 reset.
Do Porsche brakes need to be broken in after replacement?
Yes. New Porsche brake pads and rotors require a bedding-in procedure: 6-8 moderate stops from 45 mph to 10 mph, allowing the brakes to cool between each stop. This deposits an even layer of pad material on the rotor surface and prevents glazing. Avoid hard or panic braking for the first 200 miles after new pads and rotors. We provide written bedding instructions with every brake job and can perform an initial break-in run before returning the vehicle.
