Porsche 911 (996 / 997 / 991 / 992)Scheduled Maintenance

Porsche 911 Service Guide — 996, 997, 991, 992 Maintenance and Costs

The Porsche 911 is the most performance-focused vehicle we service, and the one where correct maintenance is most critical. Each generation — water-cooled 996 (1999-2004), 997 (2005-2012), 991 (2012-2019), and 992 (2019-present) — has distinct service requirements, known issues, and fluid specifications. Express Auto uses PIWIS 4, Porsche’s factory diagnostic tester, and services all 911 variants.

Common Symptoms

If you experience these symptoms, your Porsche 911 (996 / 997 / 991 / 992) may need scheduled maintenance:

Porsche Vehicle Health Check (VHC) maintenance indicator due
Oil life below service threshold
IMS bearing rattle on startup (996/997 only — water-cooled flat-6)
PDK hesitation or rough shifting (991/992 PDK models)
Coolant temperature running higher than normal
Low coolant — check for leaks at hose connections and water pump
PIWIS 4 warning codes for any system

Why This Happens

Understanding the root cause helps prevent future issues:

1.Annual service interval reached (Porsche recommends every 10,000 miles or 12 months)
2.Brake fluid moisture accumulation — Porsche specifies replacement every 2 years
3.PDK fluid degrading on 991/992 PDK (Porsche says lifetime — it is not)
4.G96/G97 manual gearbox oil needing replacement at 40,000 miles (997/991 MT)
5.IMS bearing wear on 996 and 997 M96/M97 engines (intermediate shaft bearing)
6.RMS (rear main seal) oil leak on 996/997 — common at 60,000+ miles

Our Repair Process

How we handle scheduled maintenance at Express Auto in San Bruno:

1

PIWIS 4 full diagnostic scan — read all modules on the 911's CAN bus: DME, PDK/G96, ABS, PSM, airbag, PASM, PDCC, PCM

2

Engine oil and filter change — Porsche-approved Mobil 1 0W-40 (M 229.3/229.5 spec for 996/997, 0W-40 or 0W-60 for GT3/GT3RS)

3

Brake fluid replacement — Porsche DOT 4 / ATE SL.6 every 2 years

4

Spark plugs — 911 uses a specific Porsche plug specification; replacement every 24,000 miles

PDK fluid service at 40,000 miles on 991/992 PDK (not listed but strongly recommended)

8

Manual gearbox oil — G96 gearbox on 997/991 MT: Mobil 1 75W-90 or equivalent at 40,000 miles

Frequently Asked Questions

What oil does a Porsche 911 take?

Porsche specifies Mobil 1 0W-40 for all water-cooled 911s (996, 997, 991, 992) meeting MB 229.3 or 229.5 specification. Older air-cooled 911s (pre-993) use 20W-50. The 991/992 GT3 and GT3 RS use a higher-spec 0W-60 Mobil 1 FS (fully synthetic, competition grade). Using the wrong oil viscosity or specification on a 911 — particularly a thicker conventional oil in a PDK-equipped 991/992 — can cause sluggish oil pressure on cold starts and accelerated wear. We stock the correct Porsche-spec oil for every 911 variant.

What is the IMS bearing on a Porsche 911 and should I be worried?

The IMS (intermediate shaft) bearing is a known failure point on 996 (1999-2004) and 997 (2005-2008 with M96 engine, not the later 997.2 DFI or 9A1 engines) Porsche 911s. The single-row IMS bearing can fail catastrophically, sending metal debris through the engine — total engine loss. We strongly recommend IMS bearing inspection at every service visit on 996 and early 997 911s. The 991 and 992 (9A1 engine) are NOT affected — they do not have this design.

Does the Porsche 911 PDK need service?

Yes. The 7-speed PDK on 991 and 992 models uses Esso LT 71141 fluid that Porsche lists as "lifetime." Like all dual-clutch transmissions, it degrades and benefits from service at 40,000-mile intervals. Symptoms of overdue PDK fluid: hesitation on 1-2 upshifts, harsh downshifts under deceleration, and rough engagement from rest. PDK service at Express Auto includes drain and fill, filter replacement, and a full PDK adaptation reset via PIWIS.

Can Express Auto service Porsche 911 GT3, GT3 RS, and Turbo models?

Yes. We service all 911 variants including Carrera, Carrera S, Targa, Cabriolet, GTS, GT3, GT3 RS, GT2 RS, Turbo, and Turbo S. GT3 and GT3 RS models use a 9A1 naturally aspirated engine with different oil spec (0W-60 Mobil 1 FS), a 6-speed PDK or optional manual transmission, and a different maintenance schedule (Porsche recommends annual service given the high-revving nature). Turbo and Turbo S models use twin-turbocharged 9A1 engines requiring the same fluid specs as Carrera. We understand GT3 track day considerations and performance brake service for drivers who use their 911 at Laguna Seca or Thunderhill.

How much does Porsche 911 service cost at Express Auto?

We see multiple 911s per week (all generations) and understand the specific failure modes and service requirements for each model year.

Does going to an independent shop void my 911 warranty?

No. Porsche cannot void your factory warranty because you used an independent shop, as long as Porsche-approved parts and fluids are used. We use Porsche-spec Mobil 1 0W-40 and OEM-equivalent or genuine Porsche filters. In-warranty repairs must go to a Porsche dealer. All out-of-warranty 911 service at Express Auto is fully legal and carries our own 12-month / 12,000-mile parts and labor warranty.
