Audi 2.0T Cam Follower — The Small Part That Damages the Camshaft
The HPFP cam follower on 2006–2013 Audi 2.0T FSI/TFSI engines (B6/B7 A4, B8 A4/A5, first-gen Q5) rides on the intake camshaft lobe. When it wears through, it begins damaging the cam lobe itself. A small wear part can turn into a camshaft replacement. We inspect followers at every oil service and replace them proactively before they cause lobe damage.
Warning Signs
- • Metal shavings in oil
- • Rough cold-start idle
- • HPFP fault codes
- • High-mileage 2.0T FSI/TFSI
Proactive Replacement
- • Follower + cam lobe inspection
- • HPFP condition review
- • Every 20,000–40,000 mi
- • Quoted after inspection
If You Wait
- • Cam lobe damage
- • HPFP failure
- • Camshaft replacement
- • A much larger repair
Why Peninsula Audi Owners Choose Express Auto
Independent Labor Rates
We charge independent labor rates and post our typical prices above. Free inspection, walk-in or by appointment: a code scan plus a visual inspection; $250 diagnostics, waived when we complete the repair.
Bi-Directional Scan Tools
We diagnose Audi modules — ECU, TCU, ABS, DSC, airbag and MMI — with Snap-on and Matco bi-directional scan tools: fault code read and clear, live data and bi-directional tests.
2.0T Cam Follower Specialists
We track cam follower condition in your vehicle history on every oil service. For B6/B7 A4, B8 A4/A5/Q5, and TT with the 2.0T FSI/TFSI, we catch worn followers before they reach the camshaft. Replacing a worn follower early protects the camshaft.
S and RS Expertise
All Audi S and RS models serviced with the correct oil spec: VW 502.00 for most S models, 504.00 Longlife for newer engines. S-tronic/DSG service at 40,000-mile intervals with adaptation reset. We understand S/RS-specific maintenance: Haldex rear diff service on Quattro AWD models, sport brake inspection, and high-performance suspension checks.
Same-Week Appointments
We schedule most appointments within the week, often same-day or next-day for urgent repairs. You get a direct call when your car is ready.
Central Peninsula Location
At 1041 San Mateo Ave, San Bruno, we're right off Hwy 101 and 380. Drop your Audi and take our free shuttle to San Bruno BART. Free shuttle within 5 miles of the shop, including Colma, San Bruno, Millbrae and South San Francisco.
Audi Dealer Alternative — FAQ
Does going to an independent shop void my Audi warranty?
No. Audi cannot void your factory warranty because you used an independent shop, as long as VW Group-approved parts and procedures are used. We use VW 502.00 or 504.00 Longlife-certified synthetic oil and genuine or OEM-equivalent filters on every Audi. In-warranty repairs must go to an Audi dealer. For out-of-warranty service and maintenance you can use Express Auto.
What diagnostic tools does Express Auto use for Audi?
We use Snap-on and Matco bi-directional scan tools. They read and clear fault codes across Audi modules (ECU, TCU, ABS, airbag, MMI and driver-assist systems), show live data and run bi-directional tests. We do not use Audi factory software. Free inspection, walk-in or by appointment: a code scan plus a visual inspection. Diagnostics is for when we need more time to find the root cause.
What is the Audi 2.0T cam follower issue?
The HPFP (high-pressure fuel pump) cam follower on 2006–2013 Audi 2.0T FSI/TFSI engines — used in B6/B7 A4, B8 A4/A5/Q5, and TT — rides directly on the intake camshaft lobe. When the follower wears through, it begins damaging the camshaft lobe itself. We inspect the cam follower at every oil change on 2.0T FSI/TFSI engines and replace proactively at 20,000–40,000 mile intervals.
Does Express Auto service Audi S and RS models?
Yes. We service all Audi S and RS models — S3, S4 (B8/B9), S5, S6, S7, SQ5, SQ7, RS3, RS5, RS7, and TT RS. S and RS engines require VW 502.00 or 504.00 Longlife specification oil; we stock both. S-tronic (DSG) transmission service is performed at 40,000-mile intervals with the correct VW/Audi Matic G specification fluid and a full adaptation reset after service. We understand S/RS-specific maintenance: DSC brake bleeding, Haldex rear differential service on Quattro S models, and sport suspension inspection.
Does Express Auto do Audi S-tronic (DSG) transmission service?
Yes. We service both the DQ200 7-speed dry clutch S-tronic and the DQ250 6-speed wet clutch S-tronic. Audi and VW list DSG fluid as "lifetime fill" — in practice it degrades and causes jerky 1–2 shifts, rough cold-start engagement, and premature clutch pack wear after 60,000–80,000 miles without service. We perform the fluid change, filter replacement (DQ250), and DSG adaptation reset after every service.
How much does Audi service cost at Express Auto?
We charge independent labor rates and quote each job after an inspection, so the price matches the parts your car actually needs.
